WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING AN AIR PURIFIER

BEFORE BUYING AN AIR PURIFIER

As people start to pay closer attention to air pollution and the quality of the air they breathe and, air purifiers have become one of the most effective answers to getting rid of the pollutants in our homes. The benefits of using an air purifier can be felt as soon as you start using it.

One of the many benefits is the assurance that air pollutants are being removed from the air in your home. The levels of pollutants (like airborne particles, mold spores, chemicals, gases, and volatile organic compounds) have been found to be higher inside the home than outside.

Air purifier ensures you only breathe clean and fresh air whenever you are at home. It is especially important for babies and people with symptoms of asthma or other health issues. This is so because the effects of poor air quality come in different degrees, depending on the person’s age and health status.
So, if you want to buy an air purifier, what are the factors you should pay attention to?

The Capacity of The Air Purifier

One of the most important things you must quickly check out when buying an air purifier is its cleaning capacity. This is what gives you a sign of the maximum size of a room in which the purifier will operate optimally. It is usually measured in square or cubic meters, showing the surface or the volume of the room respectively.
Any room bigger than that will compromise the result you will get. To ensure you get the best result, ensure that the maximum size of the air purifier you purchase is at least slightly greater than the size of the room in which you are planning on using it.

The Power of The Air Purifier
This is like the capacity of the purifier, but not the same. The power covers how quickly it can clean the air of a room whose maximum size has been indicated when stating the capacity of the purifier.

It is measured in Air Changes Per Hour(ACH), literally how frequently it can exchange the air in the room in one hour. For someone suffering from asthma or some allergies, it is recommended to go for a purifier with a higher ACH rating.

Filters and Replacements
The type of filter that comes with your air purifier will determine the quality of the air it will produce after filtering the pollutants. For air purifiers, the gold standard is the HEPA filter. This stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air and can remove up to 99% of dust particles from the air we breathe in, this is how you can always have your air as fresh as you can.

Good Quality models have options such as washable pre-filters, Zeolite, or carbon granules to absorb VOC odors.
One other thing to find out is the cost of the filters. You see, just like any filter, after being used for some time, it won’t work as it did while new. So, it will have to be replaced. Find out the cost of the filter and how often you will have to change it.

Noise Level
One annoying problem a few air purifiers have is their noise. It can be hard to concentrate when the noise is too loud, even harder if you want to sleep at night. (However, some prefer the steady sound for sleeping.)

So, checking out the noise level of the purifier is important. While some air purifiers make much noise, others can be very quiet. The best way to find out the level is to ask for a trial demonstration of the purifier before making the purchase.

Energy Usage
This, for many people, is perhaps the most important factor of all. Since air purifiers must rely on energy to run and have to be run continuously, they can quickly add up and reflect hugely on the energy bill. Consider this before buying one.

We are the local dealers for Austin Air Machines. This always impressed me when I was working with my clients, I bought one for myself and eventually reached out to become a dealer. In my mind they are the best value out there when you look at the quality of the American made machine, warrantee, and their durability. Some of our customers have had theirs for over 15 years!

In a case where there is a substantial mold growth in the house, air purifiers will not be enough to handle those. In such a case, what you need is a professional mold removal company to get rid of it and restore your home into its clean state. This is what we at Mold and Mildew Solutions LLC are dedicated to, and we will love to help you.

How often do I have to turn off the air purifier? Can I keep it running indefinitely?

The first answer is always… wait for it… It Depends!
Most people who purchase an air purifier for the home or office do so to reduce the effects of allergens or smoke. Having selected an efficient and powerful air purifier, you may notice a dramatic improvement in the air quality of your home. However, to achieve maximum results from your machine, it is important to know when to operate it and for how long.
How Long Should You Let It Run for Maximum Effect?
Air purifiers are designed and meant to be used for extended periods of time. It is a common misconception that operating an air purifier for an hour or two in a room will sufficiently clean the air. New particulates swirl around in the air all the time. Humans, pets, air-conditioning and heating systems, and open windows are all responsible for introducing contaminants into a room.
How long to run your purifier greatly depends on its make, model, and type. Your user manual should give you a guideline, but generally you want to keep it on for between five and eight hours at a time, keeping in mind that you can always turn it back on after it has had a rest. Austin Air Purifiers, being the best in class, are commercial grade heavy-duty built and can be run 24/7, and yes they can be run all the time—warranty is for 24/7 operation!!
The Extraction Rate
The idea is to run all the air through the unit as much as possible. This is called your Extraction Rate, and it’s pretty difficult to determine. An average unit in your space, if it was operating correctly, should extract the air to around 4-6 air changes every hour.
With this assumption, you can safely run your air purifier at least for about 12 hours a day. That should (again, depending on your unit) run all the air in your space through the filter system at least 72 times. I usually advice people to run their air purifier for 10-12 hours a day, in the spaces that they sleep, work and play.
Should You Turn Off Your Air Filter to Save Electricity?
Those who want to operate air purifiers in the home are often worried about conserving electricity. To run one or more older model allergen removers for many hours at a time not only wears out the filters and the machines themselves, but also expends an enormous amount of electricity. To conserve as much electricity as possible, consider operating it during times of the day when you will be inside the home. Similarly, if you are not using the purifier to reduce allergies, consider keeping windows open to allow for ventilation of smoke or other undesirable particles in the air, if the weather allows.
Running the purifier for a 30 minutes before you go to sleep at night and keeping it on overnight can help improve your quality of sleep, but you could/should shut the cleaner off in the morning before you leave the house. You can also turn the intake fan to a lower setting at night to reduce noise and conserve energy. Additionally, dusting and vacuuming more frequently and thoroughly may help to reduce the amount of time you have to run your purifier by tackling household allergies at the source.
Finally, consider adjusting your use of your air purifier according to the time of year. During the summer, when pollen counts are highest, running the machine for longer periods of time may be wise. Every home is unique and different, you will have to test, and adjust what works for you and your home.
