ERMI testing may sound technical, but the process is actually very straightforward.

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Dust Collection

Dust is collected from your home. This usually comes from:

  • Floors
  • Baseboards
  • Window sills
  • Other undisturbed areas

This dust contains mold particles that have settled over time.

Step 2: Lab Testing

The dust sample is sent to a laboratory where:

  • DNA is extracted from the dust
  • PCR testing identifies mold species
  • The lab measures the quantity of each mold

Step 3: ERMI Score Calculation

The lab analyzes 36 types of mold and places them into two groups:

Group 1: Molds commonly found in water‑damaged buildings

Group 2: Molds commonly found in normal environments

The lab compares these groups and generates your ERMI score.

Step 4: Results

Results typically arrive in 1–2 weeks and include:

  • ERMI score
  • Mold species identified
  • Quantity of each mold type

Cost of ERMI Testing

ERMI testing typically ranges from $300–$600 per sample, depending on the lab.
